QSR Magazine’s Top Fast-Food Snack Chains research revealed that Starbucks is further ahead than much of its snack competition. In 2023, Starbucks opened 473 new units compared to 2022, and had a total unit number of 16,346 in 2023, helping it earn the first-place ranking.
Second on the ranking was Dunkin’, which saw an increase of 210 units in 2023, bringing it to 9,580 total units in 2023, according to QSR Magazine.
Dutch Bros took third place on the ranking, with an increase of 160 units in 2023, bringing its total unit count in 2023 to 831.
All three of the top snack retailers are coffee chains which have been experimenting with new flavors throughout the summer, the magazine noted, including Dunkin’s summer s’mores menu, Dutch Bros cookie dough flavored beverages and Starbucks’ launch of its limited spicy lemonade.
Rounding out the top seven of QSR Magazine’s fast-food snack chains is Tropical Smoothie Café, Auntie Anne’s, Tim Horton’s and Smoothie King.
Earlier this summer, a variety of QSR’s launched meal deals and limited-time offers to draw price-weary customers back in. Starbucks ran a 50% Friday discount for app users in the month of May. Placer.ai found that “compared to the year-to-date average, visits to Starbucks on Fridays following the launch experienced a noticeable increase in visits. Where the visits to Starbucks on Friday May 3, before the promotion launched, were 1.1% lower than the year-to-date Friday visit average, visits on May 10—when the promotion launched—jumped by 20.0% above the YTD visit average.”
