Foodservice provider Ruiz Foods recently expanded its c-store foodservice portfolio, adding new items including: El Monterey beef, bean and cheese chimichangas; El Monterey western omelet breakfast burrito; and El Monterey sweet mini chimis, the supplier told NACS. The products are available now.

The chimichangas feature seasoned beef, pinto beans cooked in Mexican spices and a three-cheese blend of cheddar, Monterey Jack and mozzarella in a fried tortilla; the omelet comes with savory ham, fluffy eggs and vegetables wrapped in a freshly baked tortilla; and the sweet mini chimis feature a combination of flavors and cheesecake filling inside a sweet tortilla in three different flavor options: s’mores cheesecake, caramel apple cheesecake and raspberry cheesecake.

“The convenience channel is at an inflection point. C-stores have firmly established themselves as food destinations, but operators are balancing rising labor costs, space constraints and increasing consumer expectations for quality. … Our newest additions are designed to help operators compete with QSRs while maintaining the speed, simplicity and margin structure that define the channel,” Matthew Marshall, associate director of marketing and sales operations at Ruiz Foods, told NACS.

Marshall also noted that the new products address several key trends shaping the foodservice and prepared foodservice category right now:

  1. C-stores competing directly with QSRs: “Consumers increasingly view c-stores as legitimate meal solutions, not just snack stops. Products need to deliver restaurant-style flavors while still fitting the operational model of the channel.”
  2. Labor-light operations: “With staffing challenges continuing across foodservice, operators need turnkey items that require minimal prep and training. Ready-to-heat, consistent products help maintain execution standards even with lean teams.”
  3. All-daypart snacking and ‘little treat’ culture: “Consumers are layering in small indulgences throughout the day. El Monterey sweet mini chimis tap into this behavior by offering warm, dessert-forward flavors that are easy to merchandise in the hot case and drive incremental purchases.”
