MELROSE, Mass. – An initiative by the Department
of Public Health in Massachusetts, the Mass in Motion Healthy Corner Store
Program, is helping local convenience stores showcase their healthy food and
drink offer for customers looking for better-for-you choices, reports
WickedLocal.com.
Convenience stores in Melrose and
Wakefield are participating in the program, which works
with local operators to promote their healthy choices. “Participation is easy,
and in many cases, stores simply have to reorganize and feature healthy foods
they already offer. Healthy Corner Store Program participants receive help
obtaining fresh fruits and vegetables, requesting healthier products from
distributors, and accessing small business funding and services,” writes the
news source.
Already a handful of convenience stores have
begun to stock healthy choices: in Melrose: Shell (Nouria Energy), Common
Market, Bob’s Market and Tower Plaza Variety; and in Wakefield: 7-Eleven,
Circle K/Irving and Sunoco. Melrose and Wakefield are among 52 cities and towns
throughout the state are participating in the Department of Public Health’s
Mass in Motion program.
