An argument could be made that the “c” in c-store stands for community. Here’s a closer look at some of the ways c-stores have been supporting their local communities lately:

Nebraska-based Cubby’s is once again partnering with The Salvation Army 7 Can Help Kids Back to School Backpack Program. Customers can drop off unused school supplies and new backpacks to participating Cubby’s locations, where they will then be distributed to Omaha area school children on August 9 and 10. Monetary donations are also accepted.

Since the program started in 1998, more than 240,000 backpacks have been donated and given to a local child.

In Pennsylvania, Coen Markets participated in the 2nd annual iHeart Radio Schools Out Radiothon, which raised money for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Altogether, the radiothon raised $73,684, or 221,000 meals for those in need. Coen Markets presented the food bank with a $5,000 check.

Little General Stores hosted a fundraiser to raise money for cancer care in West Virginia. The event, an “Evening with Bob Huggins” (college basketball hall of fame coach), raised $100,000 at the reception and dinner.

The Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Endowment Fund was established by Coach Huggins in his mother’s name to support cancer care and research across West Virginia. Coach Huggins established this fund with Vandalia Health, which provides cancer care services spanning the entire state of West Virginia.

Weiler Convenience Stores, which has three family-owned locations in Marshfield, Wisconsin, donated $6,000 to the Marshfield Area Pet Shelter. The donation was made possible through the sale of custom t-shirts. The funds will go directly towards covering medical expenses, food, shelter and other essential needs for the animals under the shelter’s care.
