Convenience retailers are treating Mom this weekend in honor of Mother's Day, Sunday May 12.

Stewart's Shops is celebrating with 99-cent, single-scoop ice cream cones. The retailer will have its seasonal flavors—including Win-Place-Dough and Boston Cream Dream—available. Other seasonal flavors include tropical passion, brownie cheesecake, peanut butter pie, and Hip! Hip! Churr-ay.

Krist Oil will be offering a gift card deal all weekend—when customers buy a $50 gift card, they'll also receive an extra free $10 gift card. The offer is valid from May 9-12, and there's no limit on how many $50 gift cards a customer can buy.

According to the National Retail Federation, 84% of U.S. adults plan to celebrate Mother's Day and consumers plan to spend an average of $254 per person for a total of $33.5 billion, reported NACS Daily.

But as consumers celebrate by splurging on moms, retailers will take a hit on purchases made this weekend.

Based on the NRF's numbers and the 2.26% average swipe fee for Visa and Mastercard credit cards, the Merchants Payments Coalition (MPC) estimates that $5.74 per shopper will go to banks and card networks rather than the merchant when customers pay by credit card. As sponsors of the Credit Card Competition Act await a vote in the Senate, NACS reminds retailers to reach out to their members of Congress and ask that they support the Credit Card Competition Act.

"Families are trying to give mothers a special day, but the credit card industry sees Mother's Day as just another chance to dig into consumers' pockets with hidden fees. It's time for Congress to stand up for moms by passing the Credit Card Competition Act," said MPC Executive Committee member and NACS Senior Vice President of Government Relations Lyle Beckwith in a press release.
