Dollar General announced last week that it will accept health supplemental benefits in its more than 20,000 stores.

These benefits can assist customers in purchasing food, over-the-counter medicines and wellness products.

“With approximately 75% of Americans within five miles of a Dollar General, we recognize the unique access we provide to all communities, especially rural ones, that may not have affordable access to health and wellness essentials,” said Dr. Albert Wu, Dollar General’s chief medical officer. “We believe our partnership to expand access to supplemental and value-added benefits demonstrates our focus to keep our customers at the center of all we do and further establish Dollar General as a health destination.”

Dollar General recently announced it offers fresh produce in more than 5,000 stores. According to the retailer, it has more individual points of produce distribution than any other U.S. mass retailer or grocer. Dollar General’s produce assortment offers the top 20 items typically sold in traditional grocery stores to provide customers with items such as tomatoes, onions, apples, strawberries, potatoes, sweet potatoes, lemons, limes, salad mixes and more.

According to Grocery Dive, “Wu, a physician, joined Dollar General in 2021 as part of the company’s drive to sharpen its profile as a provider of healthy products. In 2022, Dollar General said it had formed a panel of healthcare experts to help guide its efforts to focus more on health and wellness.”

Last year, Dollar General announced a major expansion of its private label line.
