Checking Out the First Sheetz in Richmond, Virginia

A reporter ‘wanted to hate it’ but ‘loved it’ instead.

An Axios reporter in Richmond, Virginia, visited the city’s first Sheetz (and the fourth Sheetz to open in the Richmond area since March).

The location ran into some local resistance due to increased traffic and worries that it would harm local independent businesses. But the reporter’s verdict was that it would only enhance the area, bringing visitors who might stop by other businesses. However, “I'd be a lot more worried about the future of the fast-food chains down the road,” she wrote, referencing the location’s affordable, made-to-order hot dogs, burgers, wraps and salads. She also noted the $6.29 breakfast platter that comes with eggs, a biscuit, meat and hash browns, describing the location as “basically a gas station with a fast-food restaurant housed inside.”

Foodservice continues to grow in importance for convenience retailers. The 2023 NACS Food Safety Forum takes place October 3 and is co-located with the 2023 NACS Show.

In June, Sheetz opened a new office in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that will serve as a hub for new innovations and technological development. “Seventy Sheetz employees, which include 40 IT workers and data scientists, will be headquartered at the office, located in the Bakery Square Four office in the East Liberty neighborhood. The location is close to  Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh, and Sheetz hopes to eventually recruit graduates from these universities,” NACS Daily reported.
