Adweek Covers C-Store Evolution

C-store innovation gets recognition outside of the industry.

October 13, 2023

A recent article in Adweek discussed the evolution of convenience stores. The article showcased some of the ways that the industry has innovated in the past few years, stating “convenience stores are always exploring ways to evolve.”

The article dove into major shifts in the c-store world:

Delivery saw a rapid spike in demand during the pandemic. “Activity has cooled since the peak, but the moment provided many consumers with the experience of getting what they want in a matter of minutes—with as little effort as possible.”

While retailers are partnering with the likes of DoorDash and Uber Eats, “the economics of delivering a chocolate bar or bag of potato chips aren’t great.”

Electric vehicles now account for more than 5% of new car sales, and four in 10 Americans are likely to consider an EV when purchasing a new vehicle. The article quoted Katie Hansen, a senior analyst covering retail and ecommerce for market research firm Mintel: “Gas is going to become less of a revenue source, so they need to find ways to replace that revenue stream.” The article cited the well-known example of Norway, the country with the highest density of EVs, and how retailers such as Circle K are able to use it as “living laboratory.”

The article also takes a look at foodservice. There is also an increasing demand for fresh foods, and c-stores are working hard to get into the space. For example, Casey’s announced a three-year strategic plan which includes an investment in more fresh food.

The article cited other forms of evolution as well, including checkout-free technology and updated products.
