According to DoorDash’s recently released 26 Healthy Eats for 2026 report, consumers entered the new year by prioritizing healthy options and focusing on one notable ingredient: protein.
The company said that this year, protein is leading the healthy-eating conversation, and consumers are increasingly looking for convenient, better-for-you meals and creativity from local chefs.
“With more diners prioritizing meals that keep them full and fueled, protein-forward dishes are having a major moment. According to DoorDash data, orders of protein shakes grew 93% year over year, underscoring how many customers are seeking food choices that support their daily routines and long-term wellness goals. Although DoorDash data does not confirm a direct connection, the rise of weight-loss medications may be one factor behind the increased focus on protein,” DoorDash said.
The research also found that while “healthy” looks different for everyone, many customers are “gravitating toward meals built around whole ingredients and strong nutritional building blocks.” DoorDash is predicting items such as grain bowls, hearty salads, detoxifying açai bowls and nutrient-packed smoothies will be popular orders on its platform in 2026.
“Across all definitions, customers are increasingly turning to local restaurants that make healthy eating both wholesome and delicious,” DoorDash concluded.
In July 2025, NACS Daily noted that brands were focusing on rolling out high-protein products as the demand for protein products grew throughout the year. A 2025 Bain & Company survey found that 44% of U.S. respondents said they want to increase their protein intake, up from 34% in the same period in 2024.
