Wawa’s first North Carolina store, located in Kill Devil Hills, is set to open today, reported WRAL News. The retailer also said it plans to have 10 stores open in the state by the end of 2024 in Rocky Mount, Elizabeth City, Greenville, Wilson and Goldsboro.

The retailer plans to open 90 stores in the state over the next 10 years, updating its originally announced expansion plans of 80 stores in the state over the next decade.

The announcement occurred at a community event in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where the company has plans for up to 15 stores in the area, WRAL reported. At the event, Wawa guests sampled smoothies and Wawa Dragon Fruit Refreshers, Wawa coffees and hoagies.

“We were thrilled to share our ‘flight plan’ for North Carolina and provide details on locations to new areas during our three-stop community partnership tour,” said Kim Dowgielewicz, director of store operations for Wawa. Part of that partnership was a contribution of $5,000 to the USO of North Carolina, including the assembly of more than 200 care packages delivered to military members on bases in the region.

According to the Fayetteville Observer, Wawa officials said the first Fayetteville stores will open this year, and another three stores will open in 2025. One of those three locations will be an expanded travel center—Wawa’s first travel center location.

"North Carolina has the privilege of our first travel center," Senior Engineering Manager for Wawa, Ted Lobst, said at the Fayetteville announcement. “The Wawa Travel Center in Hope Mills will be the first of its kind and will include expanded restrooms, family restrooms, RV parking, expanded parking, an in-store seating area, high-speed diesel, CAT weigh stations, free tractor-trailer parking and professional driver merchandise items,” reported the Fayetteville Observer.

The travel center will open during the first half of 2025.
