To celebrate the cancellation of the trademark “Taco Tuesday,” held by Taco John’s for over 40 years, Taco Bell is covering a portion of fans’ Mexican cuisine order from DoorDash on Taco Tuesday, September 12. Taco Bell is opening up a $5 million “taco tab” on September 12 for customers who order Mexican cuisine from DoorDash, the company announced. The food can be from “any participating vendor selling Mexican cuisine,” not just from Taco Bell.

The QSR will also be offering free Doritos Locos Tacos every Tuesday through September 5.

"Taco Tuesday belongs to all who make, sell, eat and celebrate tacos, and this Free-For-All will not only thank taco fans who supported the cause, but will also spotlight local restaurants and vendors who can now embrace Taco Tuesdays without fear of legal action," said Taco Bell U.S. Chief Marketing Officer Taylor Montgomery. "When tacos win, we all win. … We all win when taco vendors everywhere are free to join the movement, and we all win when taco fans can freely celebrate and support Taco Tuesdays at Taco Bell or anywhere else."

Earlier in the summer, the Daily reported on the dispute between Taco John’s and Taco Bell over Taco John’s trademark “Taco Tuesday,” as Taco Bell claimed it was “not cool” to own the term.

Last month, however, Taco John’s discontinued its fight against Taco Bell’s petition to cancel the trademark, which now leaves the phrase open for anybody in 49 states to use freely (New Jersey is the only state where the trademark has not been canceled).

In conjunction with the cancellation, Taco John’s donated $40,000 to the organization Children of Restaurant Employees (CORE), which the Taco Bell Foundation matched. Taco Bell will also be matching up to $1 million in round-up donations made by customers at checkout every Tuesday. The donations will continue to fund the Taco Bell Foundation’s Community Grants and Live Más Scholarships.
