Grubhub Reveals What America Ate in 2022

Consumers craved burritos, Australian food and iced coffee.

CHICAGO—Grubhub’s most ordered dish of 2022 was a burrito, according to its 2022 Delivered report.

“By analyzing millions of orders from diners this year, it’s clear that comfort inspired what we ate, revealing who we were in 2022,” wrote Grubhub in a statement.

Burritos jumped from the No. 8 spot last year to the lead, and customers ordered burritos more than four million times on the app. To celebrate the burrito claiming the most popular order of the year on Grubhub, Chipotle is offering $5 off orders of $20 or more for Grubhub+ members during the month of December.

  3. Cheese pizza
  4. Pad Thai
  5. Chicken quesadilla
  6. California roll
  7. Fried chicken sandwich
  8. Caesar salad
  9. Chicken Tikka Masala
  10. Boneless wings

The top breakfast order was a sausage, egg and cheese sandwich. In 2022, Denver unseated New York City, ranking no. 1 in early bird breakfast orders (placed between 5 a.m. – 8 a.m.).

The most popular lunch item delivered via Grubhub was also a burrito, while a cheeseburger took the No. 2 spot. Grubhub says salads came in at No. 6, with Greek salads being the most popular type, followed by Caesar, house and Cobb.

While New York City holds the title of the city that never sleeps, it was Boston that topped the charts in late-night noshing (highest percent of total orders placed 10 p.m. and later).

  5. Cheese pizza

When it comes to coffee, iced coffee jumped from third place last year to top coffee order this year.

“‘Iced coffee over everything’ was the motto—regardless of the temperature outside. It became a daily routine, getting that coffee to milk ratio just right,” wrote Grubhub.

Oat milk was the top milk alternative this year, and Grubhub customers preferred oat milk 4:1 over almond milk.

The top trending cuisines were Australian, South African and Cambodian, with Australian food realizing a 531% growth year over year.

This year, Grubhub also partnered with Amazon, giving Prime members a free one-year Grubhub+ membership trial. Since the offer launched in July, Prime members have placed millions of orders, according to Grubhub. The company has identified the top five local restaurants of the year for Prime members with Grubhub+ in select cities and is offering a special, limited-time promotion for all Grubhub diners.

Grubhub is also sending diners their customized 2022 Delivered recap report that delves into personal ordering highlights and insights on how delivery impacted more than what they ate but who they are.
