Stewart’s Shops is under contract to acquire stores in Dexter and Alexandria Bay in northern New York, the retailer said on its website.

The retailer said it is acquiring The Dexter Market at 308 Brown St. in Dexter and the Alex Bay Big M Market at 45560 Route 12 in the town of Alexandria. The purchase of The Dexter Market and the Alex Bay Big M Market are “expected to close in the coming weeks,” and terms of the deals were not disclosed.

“The expansion is the latest example of the investments Stewart’s is making around Watertown and the Great Lakes Seaway Trail. Stewart’s is in the midst of rebuilding the shop at the corner of Coffeen and North Massey streets in Watertown. And Stewart’s added three new shops last fall with the purchase of assets from Sliders Food Mart in Clayton, Croghan and Harrisville,” the retailer said.

Following the acquisitions, Stewart’s said it will renovate the properties with plans to begin operating at each location in the coming months.

“We have been serving northern New York for decades and these latest investments are the perfect opportunity to expand into two more vibrant, close-knit communities,” said Stewart’s Shops President Chad Kiesow.
Stewart’s Shops operates more than 400 shops across upstate New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

In late 2024, Stewart’s Shops acquired 45 Jolley stores, including five in New York, two in New Hampshire and 38 locations in Vermont. The retailer sold five of the acquired stores in early 2025 as part of an agreement with the Federal Trade Commission following the deal’s closing.
