Two-thirds of American adults drink coffee each day (66%)—higher than daily consumption of tea, juice, soda and bottled water and up nearly 7% compared to 2020, reported the National Coffee Association (NCA) in a new report. The Spring 2025 National Coffee Data Trends (NCDT) report found that every American coffee drinker consumes three cups per day on average.
“The NCDT report, conducted in January 2025 by Dig Insights on behalf of the National Coffee Association (NCA), affirms coffee’s place at the heart of Americans’ daily lives and the popularity that allows coffee to account for 8% of the U.S. food service sector (NCA 2023 economic impact report),” NCA wrote.
The report found that consumption of specialty coffee has increased by nearly 18% (consumed by 46% of American adults during the past day in January 2025, compared to 39% in 2020). Consumption of traditional coffee held steady over the same time (consumed by 42% of adults during the past day in January 2025, compared to 43% in 2020).
NCA wrote that within the specialty category, past-day consumption of espresso-based beverages (which include cappuccinos, espressos, lattes, caffè mochas, macchiatos, flat whites and Americanos) increased by 17% over the past five years (from 24% of adults in 2020 to 28% in 2025), and past-day consumption of non-espresso-based beverages (which include frozen blended coffees, cold brew coffees and nitro coffees) rose by nearly 42% (from 12% of adults in 2020 to 17% in 2025).
“While the number of Americans having specialty coffee in the past day has increased dramatically between 2020 and 2025, the proportion of traditional coffee consumed compared to specialty coffee has remained consistent—for every 100 cups of coffee consumed, 59 are specialty and 41 are traditional,” NCA said.
Last month, NACS Daily reported that Gen Z has different coffee preferences than previous generations. According to news outlet Fast Company, they “like it cold, sweet and loaded with creamer. For a lot of younger drinkers, that very first cup of coffee was just as likely to be iced as it was hot. And about 85% of Gen Z coffee fans are adding creamer, compared to just 70% of coffee drinkers overall,” the outlet wrote.
