At least 68 people, including 18 that needed to be treated at hospitals, have fallen ill across 19 states in a salmonella outbreak that may be linked to cucumbers, reported the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last week.
Federal officials announced they were investigating the outbreak believed to be tied to cucumbers grown by Agrotato, S.A. de C.V. in Sonora, Mexico, and sold by SunFed Produce, which is based in Arizona, and other importers, reported The New York Times. No deaths have been reported.
Since the outbreak, SunFed recalled all sizes of the product described as “whole fresh American cucumbers.”
The cucumbers were sold in the United States and Canada, according to the FDA.
According to the company’s announcement, the recalled cucumbers were distributed to grocers in 26 states: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. SunFed said it’s possible that contaminated cucumbers also reached consumers through retailers in other states, reported The Washington Post.
The CDC has advised consumers to throw out any cucumbers bought between October 12 and November 26 if they do not know where they were grown.
This recall comes just a few weeks after carrots and baby carrots sold in the United States under brand names including Nature’s Promise, Wegmans and Trader Joe’s were recalled over an E. coli outbreak that left at least one person dead and 15 others hospitalized.
