WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services (FNS) has approved California’s request to allow hot foods to be purchased at SNAP-authorized retailers through January 16, 2019. The waiver applies to the counties of Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Plumas, Tehama, Santa Barbara, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Sutter, Yuba and Ventura.

California has been advised as follows: Retailers in your state may need as much as 24-36 hours to make changes that will allow for sale of hot foods. Please set appropriate expectations when messaging hot foods availability to SNAP participants.

“Thousands of California residents are trying to piece their lives back together even as these wildfires continue blazing,” said Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services Brandon Lipps in an earlier press release. “This waiver will allow residents more flexibility to use in feeding their families as they get back on their feet.”
