McDonald’s will be launching a beverage test in the U.S. later this year at some of its existing restaurants to incorporate menu items inspired by its beverage-focused store concept CosMc’s, reported QSR Magazine.

More details are forthcoming, McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski reportedly said in a recent earnings call, as the company continues to test, learn and position itself for growth in the beverage space.

“Kempczinski on Thursday said McDonald’s discovered some ‘interesting learnings’ through CosMc’s rollout thus far (there are currently five, including four in Texas to go along with the original Bolingbrook, Illinois, store). Those findings better informed McDonald’s understanding of consumers’ customization preferences and interests in emerging beverage categories,” wrote QSR Magazine.

“So when you think about profit-pool growth in the industry, we expect beverages is going to be a place where there’s significant growth in the profit pool…We think there’s more that we can be doing to capture our fair share of that,” Kempczinski said.

The CEO estimated McDonald’s holds about 10% of coffee share sector-wide, wrote the outlet.

McDonald’s launched the small-format, beverage-led concept in 2024, and was its first new restaurant concept in the United States in 60 years. The first location had a beverage-heavy menu and minimal food options, similar to a Starbucks. It features a range of specialty lemonades, teas, various blended beverages and cold coffee. Customers can customize their drinks with popping boba, flavor syrups, energy and vitamin C shots.

In January, NACS Daily reported that McDonald’s planned to close three of its larger-format CosMc’s locations. However, the QSR still plans to open two smaller-format units of the drive-thru beverage concept this year. All but one of the seven locations are in Texas.
