ChargePoint and Kum & Go show retailers how they can design an EV charging strategy to increase sales.

ALEXANDRIA, Va.—The NACS webinar “Design Your EV Charging Strategy to Drive Revenue” is now available on demand. The free webinar took place last week, presenting convenience store retailers with ways they can diversify their fueling options while increasing in-store sales.

“Vehicle fueling is democratizing today,” said John Shaer, director of retail, fueling and convenience, ChargePoint. “What is occurring and will continue to occur is that away-from-home charging will be available everywhere: the workplace, the mall, restaurants and retailers of all types, including convenience retailers.”

Shaer said that in order to power the number of EVs that will be in operation by 2030, public charging stations will have to grow fourfold by 2025 and eightfold by 2030, including over 170,000 public DC fast chargers, according to an S&P Global Mobility forecast.

Brad Norman, senior manager, strategic incentive programs, ChargePoint, told the audience that there were three metrics to consider when evaluating the timing and placement of charging infrastructure.

“If we had to boil it down, it's going to be leveraging EV registration data and traffic count that's going to lend towards higher utilization,” said Norman, who also mentioned utility tariffs and outside incentives as other factors.

Jacob Maass, senior fuel pricing manager, Kum & Go, walked the audience through his company’s EV journey. The retailer started DC fast charger installation in late 2017 and now has chargers at 34 locations.

“180,000 customers came to our sites to charge with us in 2022,” said Maass. “That is 180,000 customers that would've not have come if we did not have EV charging accessible, and we do know that a strong portion of these customers are coming inside.”
