NEW YORK—Chick-fil-A has opened a break room for food-delivery workers in New York City. It offers a restroom, bike storage, outlets for phone chargers, comfortable seating, Wi-Fi and beverages.

“In metro areas like New York City, we see the same food delivery workers come through nearly every day of the week, several times a day, and how taking an extra second to warm up between deliveries or have a glass of water helps to fuel them for their shift,” said Jared Caldwell, a Chick-fil-A restaurant owner/operator in New York City. “The food delivery community helps to power our businesses, and this is just our small way of showing appreciation for all they do.”

The location is named The Brake Room and will be open now through Thursday, April 13, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The space is free for food-delivery workers who can provide proof of a delivery within the past week via an eligible third-party food delivery app.

“We created The Brake Room as a small gesture, a little thing to thank them for all they do to serve our guests, especially in a market experiencing high demand in sometimes harsh winter weather conditions,” said Joe Saracino, senior vice president of brand strategy, advertising and media at Chick-fil-A.

There are more than 65,000 food delivery workers in New York City, according to data cited by Chick-fil-A from McKinsey & Company. The greatest volume of deliveries from Manhattan-based Chick-fil-A restaurants were reported in the winter months of 2022.

Last October, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced an initiative that would provide locations for delivery workers to rest while on the job, reports CNN. “While most people have a break room to rest while at work, app-based food delivery workers do not,” Adams said at the time.

A recent survey by Market Force found that consumers rank Chick-fil-A as their favorite chicken QSR. The restaurant had an overall score of 84%. Chick-fil-A scored 84% for food quality, 88% for staff friendliness and 91% for cleanliness.

Here’s how one Chick-fil-A implemented a three-day workweek for its employees, a new approach to scheduling that is winning positive feedback.
