Scope of the Industry

There are more than 152,000 c-stores in the United States, per the 2024 NACS/NIQ Convenience Industry Store Count

The average convenience store collects about $1.38 million in taxes for local, state and federal governments. This includes property taxes, payroll taxes, sales taxes and taxes that are assessed on a variety of products sold at stores. Moreover, these taxes are collected in a small footprint—the average store is 3,041 square feet. But even factoring in a total lot size of 70,000 square feet, stores generate about $19 per square foot per year in taxes, a figure that compares very favorably to even the busiest large-format stores.

Also, convenience stores create economic stability and growth. In 2022, the industry had sales of $906.1 billion and provided an estimated 2.44 million jobs.
