ALEXANDRIA, Va.—In light of today’s tumultuous labor market, it’s likely time to give your hiring process an upgrade, and Sprockets, a provider of AI-powered hiring software, outlines four steps businesses can take to upgrade how they hire employees in the e-book, “Why Your Hiring Process Is Broken and How to Fix It.”

“Retailers have to be willing to let go of traditional hiring practices that are dated and aren’t helping hire quality workers who stay long-term with the company, ultimately costing c-stores thousands of dollars in turnover,” said Zach Matook, director of Marketing at Sprockets.

One retail chain willing to take a hard look at its hiring process is The Spinx Company, which is based in Greenville, South Carolina, and has more than 80 locations and 1,500 associates. Spinx already had an HR assessment tool in place, but the convenience retailer was still struggling to stabilize staffing levels.

“Spinx decided to try a pilot program with Sprockets’ automated candidate screening tool in about 30 of their locations. Spinx put our tool head-to-head with what they had in place,” said Matook.

Spinx piloted Sprockets’ hiring solution, which created unique success profiles based on the mental makeup of each location’s best employees and used these to evaluate applicants. The system assigns candidates with “fit scores” based on their likelihood to succeed and stay longer than 90 days.

After 90 days, Spinx saw a significant improvement in employee retention on top of cutting hiring costs, according to Matook. The retailer saw a 16% increase in 90-day employee retention compared to a competitor. That resulted in saving $31,200 in turnover over the 90 days of the pilot test, as well as saving an estimated $124,800 annually on turnover costs.

“The pilot tool was so successful that Spinx decided to use it in all its locations, replacing their former assessment tool,” said Matook. “HR assessment tools can be a helpful asset to a hiring process, but having the right assessment tool in place is a game changer.”
