BOISE – Albertons is experimenting with technology similar to Amazon Go, making it possible for customers to grab what they need and leave without scanning a barcode or going through the traditional checkout process.
The company is starting with a limited set of products like meal kits and prepared offerings. The technology will also be used at Albertsons gas pumps in a one-touch pump-and-go- process that uses mobile devices. The fuel pilot is said to launch in Boise.
The in-store pilot hasn’t launched quite yet either. The company may wait for Amazon Go to launch new stores to scope out and avoid any pitfalls. But Albertons isn’t the only one looking ahead to checkout-free technology: Walmart also explored the idea last year, launching the program in ten stores but recently ended its Scan & Go operations based on competition and lack of consumer interest.
Recently, Albertsons discussed a proposed merger with drugstore chain Rite Aid. The merger would include revamping the “front of store” operations at Rite Aid locations to integrate Albertsons ideas and best practices. Rite Aid brands would roll out in all Albertsons locations to increase foot traffic and basket size, alongside enhanced clinic operations.
