GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. – Dollar General is testing a shopping app called DG Go that allows customers to scan and pay for their merchandise directly from their phone, Progressive Grocer reports. The app is available for both iOS and Android devices. The discount chain is testing the app at 10 Nashville-area stores.

Shoppers simply download the app, scan products, and pay directly in the app. At a dedicated DG Go checkout tablet, they get and scan a QR code, then bag their products. Customers receive a receipt via the app and email immediately after completing their order. The app also automatically applies digital coupons as the customer scans items.

Multiple supermarkets have been playing with mobile checkout lately, with mixed reactions from customers. Kroger and Meijer have scan-as-you-shop technology in stores, and Amazon Go will open additional locations soon. However, Walmart has scaled back its Scan & Shop technology rollout, although it launched Check Out with Me, with associates in garden centers using mobile devices to help shoppers check out while in the garden center.

More retailers likely will be testing mobile checkout apps as technology continues to evolve to make scan-and-go easier.
