GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. – In addition to 1,000 Dollar General store remodels scheduled for this year, the discount retailer will add fresh fruits and vegetables to 400 stores, bringing the number of outlets carrying those items to 450 by year-end, reports Supermarket News.

The Tennessee-based chain is adding 20,000 cooler doors throughout its network of more than 14,300 stores in order to provide an expanded assortment of perishable items and offer shoppers a wider selection of fresh foods, particularly in rural areas with limited availability.

But Dollar General is not ignoring nonfood offerings. This year, the company is giving the health and beauty care category a facelift with updated displays and marketing, plus a new initiative involving “treasure hunt” displays that feature limited-time offers.
