KFC Germany Launches Tray Typer

Fast-food chain turns typical food tray into Bluetooth-enabled keyboard.

NEW YORK – The Verge reports that KFC Germany is testing the KFC Tray Typer, which is way more sophisticated than the disposable paper slips used on food trays.

The KFC Tray Typer, which the fast-food chain is using as part of an advertising campaign, “is a super-thin, rechargeable Bluetooth keyboard that arrives with your tray of fast food, connects to your smartphone, and lets you text with sticky fingers without messing up your screen,” writes the news source.

While it may sound gimmicky, technologically the Tray Typer is cutting edge, notes The Verge, adding that U.K.-based electronics company CSR “showed off” a Bluetooth-enabled keyboard in 2013 just as thin and flexible as the Tray Typer.

This also isn’t KFC’s first time using technology in a marketing campaign. The Verge writes that last year KFC Japan launched a keyboard, mouse and USB stick in the shapes of fried chicken pieces. “Actually creating a product as useful as the Tray Typer — even if it's just part of an advertising campaign — looks pretty sane by comparison,” the news source notes.
