NEW YORK – A war of the wieners has broken out, a battle among top dogs to find out which foodservice chain is cutting the mustard.

What’s really going on is Burger King’s entry into the hot dog arena, and it’s not sitting too well with chains such as 7-Eleven, Wienerschnitzel, Checkers and Rally's.

“[Burger King] took a shot of coming into our backyard and we're not going to have any of it,” Rick Silva, CEO of Checkers and Rally's, told CNBC.

“Burger King is late to the party and they are overpriced,” Terri Snyder, chief marketing officer of Checkers & Rally's, told CNBC. She added that the burger chain will likely put millions into new advertisements and open up space on social media for a conversation about hot dogs.

Twittersphere tweets are flying back and forth, although Wienerschnitzel prefers to let the “war” play out. “I think it's funny that those guys are going after each other," Doug Koegeboehn, chief marketing officer for the chain, told CNBC. "We aren't really worried about it.” Koegeboehn said Wienerschnitzel is thanking customers for their loyalty by offering a free chili dog with any purchase at the restaurant through the end of February. The offer is promoted on social media with the hashtag #WorldsMostWantedWeiner.
