ATLANTA–The Chick-fil-A cows might start promoting vegan options as well as chicken, as the chain considers adding a vegan sandwich to its menu, CNBC reports. Currently, the quick-service chicken chain has no vegan options.
Vegan and vegetarian options are becoming popular menu items at fast-food chains. Burger King, Chipotle and Taco Bell are putting meatless dishes on their menus from companies like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods.
Chick-fil-A has been thinking about vegan menu options, such as meat substitute entrees, but is currently in “the early stages of understanding” potential additions. The chain has a more limited menu compared with other QSRs.
McDonald’s also recently announced it might bring a veggie burger to the United States. The fast-food burger chain already sells veggie burgers in other markets. “I certainly know our teams are paying close attention and discussing this amongst each other and with some of the options that are out there,” said Steve Easterbrook, CEO of McDonald’s. “So maybe more to come but nothing much to say about it at the moment.”
The U.S. market for vegan and vegetarian options is exploding. According to Euromonitor International, the market was $1.44 billion last year. Euromonitor predicts that will hit $2.5 billion by 2023.
