Wawa has reportedly started its “largest expansion” ever according to Delco Today. “A $300 million expansion in the next few years is planned in central Pennsylvania,” wrote the outlet.

Delco Today reported that Wawa is planning to open new stores in Indiana and Ohio, among other states, with a five-year plan for 700 additional locations.

John Poplawski, Wawa’s vice president of real estate, said it will be the largest five-year period of expansion in Wawa’s history.

“The Delaware County convenience chain broke ground on its first stores in three Midwestern states this month, each of which it has earmarked for further expansion,” wrote the Philadelphia Business Journal. “It’s a $1.2 billion investment in that U.S. region, costing about $7.5 million per store, with each location employing about 35 people.”

Wawa is gearing up for the growth by expanding its partnership with McLane Company Inc., as it continues to expand in the Midwest, Mid Atlantic and Northeast. McLane’s Bluegrass distribution center in Hebron, Kentucky, will serve new Wawa locations in Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio, according to a press release sent to NACS.

“We’re proud to have served as a dedicated partner alongside Wawa over the years,” said Vito Maurici, McLane’s chief customer experience officer. “With this expanded partnership, we remain committed to supporting Wawa’s growth as a leader in convenience retail and foodservice through our robust network and product offerings.”

The reports come as Wawa has been expanding in other regions. In March, NACS Daily reported that Wawa announced a “westward Virginia expansion plan.” The announcement was followed by a groundbreaking on its new Lynchburg, Virginia store.

Wawa also recently opened the doors to two new Georgia locations, both located in the town of Hinesville, on “complete opposite ends of the city,” according to local news outlet WTOC.
