ALTOONA, Pa.—Sheetz has partnered with Robert Morris University of Pittsburgh to make it possible for all part-time and full-time Sheetz employees to enroll in RMU certificate, bachelor’s and master’s degree programs and receive a large tuition discount.
According to the Pittsburgh Business Journal, when the discount is combined with the existing tuition assistance benefits Sheetz offers, most employees could earn a degree with “little or nothing out-of-pocket.”
Derya Jacobs, senior vice president for corporate relations and strategic initiatives, stated, “We as a university made a commitment a few years ago to help our region and nation with workforce development and retaining talent within the organizations and also within the region… We work with corporations closely to understand their needs when it comes to employee development and retaining them in the workforce.”
Sheetz recently announced plans to hire 2,800 new employees, and this is just one in a series of benefits the company offers to attract quality applicants. As NACS Daily reported earlier this month, Sheetz will bump the hourly wages for its 18,000 c-store workers by $2, effective May 21. This permanent increase equates to a $50 million annual investment and follows the company’s $28.5 million investment in store employee wages announced in February. This follows on the backs of many convenience stores using various recruiting steps to find workers in the current tight labor market, including hiring bonuses and employee referral bonuses.
Supporting educational pursuits is something long encouraged within the convenience retailing community. NACS also supports convenience industry employees who want to further their education. Each year the NACS Foundation’s Future Fund scholarship program distributes up to 11 scholarships for undergraduate career education at a community college or university. Selected scholarship applicants are awarded $3,000 each toward tuition, as well as a stipend to attend the upcoming NACS Show. This year’s show will be held Oct. 5-8, 2021, in Chicago.
Companies may nominate multiple applicants for scholarships. The deadline to submit applications for the 2021-22 NACS Foundation Future Fund Scholarship is Monday, June 7, 2021. Award winners will be notified on or before July 9. A scholarship application can be found here. Since the inception of Future Fund, the program has awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships to employees of NACS retail member companies.
