NEW YORK—Beyond Meat is swapping out its signature meatless burger with a new recipe formulated to mimic real beef even better, CNN Business reports. The recipe, which will gradually take the place of the current item, takes out mung beans and adds more minerals and vitamins for a meatier taste. The new plant-based burger also has fewer calories compared to the current one.

The improved patty will hit shelves next week, while restaurants will receive shipments in June. The tweaked recipe comes as consumers continue to clamor for plant-based meats. Retail sales of meat substitutes skyrocketed 28% over the past year, according to Nielsen.

“This is the best version of beef we've done,” said Chuck Muth, Beyond chief growth officer. However, Muth indicated the company is already working on the next version, as the pace of its innovations has been “accelerating.”

Earlier this year, Beyond Meat struck a deal with PepsiCo to partner on development and distribution of plant-based protein snacks and beverages. In February, the company revealed separate agreements with McDonald’s and Yum Brands on the McPlant burger and plant-based menu products, respectively. Beyond has also had its eye on expanding its supermarket presence, with its products currently in the frozen section of 28,000 US retail locations.
