7-Eleven Pilots Pay-at-the-Pump, Mobile Checkout

Customers can pay for gas via voice command and check out in-store with an app in certain markets.

IRVING, Texas—7-Eleven is piloting a new fuel loyalty program designed to give customers contactless payment options to reduce touchpoints and provide instant savings at the pump and is also introducing mobile checkout in certain markets so customers can skip the line and pay for items using their smartphone.

Now available at participating stores in North and South Orlando, Florida; Texas and Woodbridge, Virginia, the pay-at-the-pump program uses internally developed technology to accept payment for fuel through the 7Rewards loyalty program, which is found in the 7-Eleven app, the company said. The program lets customers use mobile payment options or Siri shortcuts on their Apple iPhone, and they can even use voice commands to make payments.

App users will receive a discount of 11 cents per gallon on the first seven fill-ups on all fuel grades. After that, they will receive a three-cents per gallon discount on all fuel grades (limitations apply). The per-gallon discount automatically shows on the pump display. RaceTrac recently rolled out a new monthly fuel subscription program, RaceTrac Rewards VIP, that provides members with discounts at the pump.

“Adding fuel savings takes the 7Rewards loyalty program to the next level,” said Tarang Sethia, chief digital officer, 7-Eleven. “Fuel loyalty offers value with an elevated experience that allows customers to pump, pay and be on their way all without taking out their wallet.”

To receive fuel loyalty discounts, customers must be at a participating 7-Eleven store and have a verified phone number in their 7Rewards loyalty program account. To activate the experience and discounts before stepping out of the car, they simply select—or tell Siri to select—the fuel pump number. Customers can choose to either fill their tank or pre-select their desired amount of fuel, then complete the purchase by authorizing the payment through the app.

Customers who don’t care to use mobile apps or voice commands can simply type in their 7Rewards verified phone number at the pump to receive the fuel rewards.

The fuel discount offer is only available at participating stores via the 7Rewards loyalty program. The 7-Eleven app is available for download on smartphones via the Apple App Store or via Google Play.

Meanwhile, the new mobile checkout feature is available at participating stores in Dallas, Texas; Manhattan and Long Island, New York; and Utah, 7-Eleven said.

The frictionless shopping experience is integrated with the 7Rewards loyalty program where members can earn and redeem points on product purchases and receive coupons and promotions. Mobile checkout works on both Android and iOS devices and is available for most 7-Eleven merchandise that has a barcode. Some items still require store associate assistance, such as hot foods, financial services and age-restricted products (alcohol, tobacco and lottery tickets).

Customers scan barcode items in the app and pay for purchases via Apple Pay, Google Pay or a debit or credit card in the app. Confirm your purchase by scanning the QR code on confirmation screen once the payment is authorized.

“Now more than ever, customers are looking for an even greater level of convenience—one that includes minimizing contact with others,” said Sethia. “We want to meet that need during this uncertain time and Mobile Checkout is one of the innovative ways we can do that.”
