Murphy USA reported this week that net income in the quarter ended September 30 was $176 million, up from $129.9 million in the same period last year.

The retailer said in its earnings report that total fuel contribution in the quarter was 37.0 cents per gallon (cpg), compared to 30.7 cpg in the period last year.

Merchandise contribution dollars in the quarter were $234.5 million, a 2.8% decrease from $241.2 million last year, the earnings release said.

Murphy USA previously reported an increase in net income in its second quarter.

"We are pleased with our third quarter performance, which reflects the resilience of our customers and the durability of our business model,” said President and CEO Mindy West in the earnings release. “Against a backdrop of higher and more volatile fuel prices, our customers continue to rely on Murphy USA for essential fuel and convenience trips, while our teams remained focused on providing compelling value."

Murphy USA/Express opened four new-to-industry stores in the quarter, while closing one Murphy USA/Express and one QuickChek, according to the report. Murphy USA has been growing its store count in recent quarters.
