Walmart Lets Go Hundreds of Workers
The affected workers are from the retailer’s Texas, California, Florida, Pennsylvania and New Jersey e-commerce fulfillment centers.

NEW YORK—Reuters was the first to report that Walmart is laying off hundreds of workers at five U.S. Walmart facilities that fulfill e-commerce orders.
The news source writes that about 200 workers were laid off from the retailer’s fulfillment center in Pedricktown, New Jersey, and hundreds of others were let go from facilities in Fort Worth, Texas; Chino, California; Davenport, Florida; and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, due to a reduction or elimination in evening and weekend shifts.
"We recently adjusted staffing levels to better prepare for the future needs of customers," Walmart said in a statement, adding: “This decision was not made lightly, and we’re working closely with affected associates to help them understand what career options may be available at other Walmart locations.”
Impacted workers would be paid for 90 days to find jobs at other facilities, including those in Joliet, Illinois, and Lancaster, Texas, where the company has opened up new high-tech e-commerce distribution centers, according to Reuters.
This week Amazon announced 9,000 job cuts, following 18,000 layoffs in January, according to the Associated Press. Earlier this month, Amazon closed eight Amazon Go stores and announced that it was suspending construction of its new HQ2 in Arlington, Va.
