PHILADELPHIA—Today, Wawa opens its new Stadium Store, the first within city limits to sell beer, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. The location is less than two miles from the South Philly sports complex and boasts a beer cave. The store is the sixth in Pennsylvania to stock beer.

As part of the opening celebration, Wawa officially announced its support of Philadelphia’s proposal to host the FIFA World Cup in 2026 with a “Join the team” digital billboard and a coffee cup supporting the city’s bid. Customers who sign their support of the bid during the grand opening will get a free “For the love of the game” Philly soccer 2026 t-shirt, and the first in-store customers will receive a free Wawa Philadelphia t-shirt, too.

Wawa and Philadelphia Soccer 2026 also previewed a new interactive soccer exhibit, which will launch at Independence Visitors Center during the Wawa Welcome America Festival. The store opening happens on the same day as the Wawa vs. Sheetz debate. Hosted by City & State PA, Wawa lover U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle and Sheetz fanatic Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman will discuss why they love their respective stores.

“Over the years, Sheetz and Wawa have worked together on initiatives and charitable endeavors to benefit our communities,” said Lori Bruce, Wawa spokesperson. “Because of this mutual respect, we have decided not to take an active role in this event—but certainly understand that our customers and fans have a great deal of passion for both companies.”

Also this week, the Wawa Foundation announced the four finalists for 2021’s “The Wawa Foundation Hero Award.” Now the public can vote to determine the top grant recipient for four nonprofits serving Philadelphia. The four finalists are ABC Men Inc., The Garces Foundation, Police Athletic League of Philadelphia and The Veterans Group. Voting runs June 10 to 29.
