United Fuels Midwest has sold its downstream energy assets, including 13 locations across Minnesota and South Dakota, as well as a wholesale commercial fuels distribution business and a petroleum transport company, according to a statement from Downstream Energy Group, which advised the sale.

The portfolio includes five travel centers and eight convenience store locations, the majority of which operated under the Speedway brand as franchisee and licensee sites. Buyers included Casey’s General Stores, Staples Oil Company and one additional buyer active in the Upper Midwest market. With the sale, United Fuels is exiting from retail, wholesale and logistics operations.

“This transaction marks a significant milestone for United Fuels, who successfully built a diverse network of retail and commercial fuel assets across the region. The divestiture provides an efficient outcome for all stakeholders, ensuring operational continuity and seamless transitions across the retail, wholesale and transportation businesses,” the release stated.

Casey’s has made several acquisitions in 2025, including four Kum & Go locations in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in October. Casey’s is also reportedly breaking into the west Michigan market with a deal for eight Grand Rapids–area Kum & Go locations, reported local outlet Crain’s Grand Rapids Business.

In January, Casey’s acquired Wow! Foodmart LLC and its affiliated retail portfolio, which included one travel center, seven convenience stores and four liquor stores in central Kentucky. It also has plans to expand in Texas, and reportedly has submitted 21 filings with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation since 2024.
