Sheetz hosted a groundbreaking for its Romulus, Michigan, location, the first Sheetz in the state, yesterday afternoon, reported ABC 7 News in Detroit.
Travis Sheetz, the retailer’s president and CEO, attended the groundbreaking and met with local reporters.
Travis Sheetz told reporters that Sheetz offers a retail concept that, in most states, is so different from what most people are familiar with that it is hard to visualize until they see it, which is why the company, he said, is so eager to get the first Michigan location open.
According to the Free Press, Sheetz stores bring about 30 jobs per location with pay starting at just under $15 an hour. Benefits include medical and dental insurance, a retirement plan and stock ownership—and the stores enhance a community's tax base.
With each visit to Michigan, Travis Sheetz has learned more about the state, according to the Free Press. Sheetz now knows how to make “a Michigan left” and about Detroit-style pizza, which he said he recently tried making at home in Pennsylvania.
Sheetz plans to open 50-60 stores in Michigan over the next five to six years. The Romulus location is expected to open to the public in late 2024.
