The privately-owned company will now allow customers in Ohio to make qualifying purchases online with SNAP benefits.

“After months of collaboration with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) and the United States Department of Agriculture, Giant Eagle has met all requirements to permit online EBT acceptance,” according to a company press release.

The news of online assistance payments in Ohio adds to the grocery retailer’s continued growth in offering payment options for its customers. In 2021, Giant Eagle began accepting online EBT payments in Pennsylvania.

“At Giant Eagle, we take seriously our responsibility to help our neighbors thrive by providing safe access to healthy foods,” said Dan Donovan, Giant Eagle spokesperson. “We are extremely appreciative of our partnerships with ODJFS and USDA, enabling us to evolve how we serve Ohio.”

Customers wishing to pay with SNAP benefits online can order groceries through Giant Eagle’s website or in the app and enter their EBT card information at checkout. For remaining items in their order not eligible for the program, they can use a traditional debit or credit card.

Tiffany Scruggs, vice president of client services at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, said, “By Giant Eagle accepting SNAP payments online, they not only have made shopping more convenient and easier but have also made it more accessible for thousands of our neighbors who might otherwise struggle to afford the fresh, nutritious foods they need to lead healthy, active lives.”
