The payment technology company NCR Corporation announced that it had been recognized for the 20th consecutive year as the world’s largest self-checkout vendor, according to data from RBR Data Services’ Global EPOS and Self-Checkout 2023.

“This research recognizes NCR as a key SCO marketplace leader for the past 20 years,” said David Wilkinson, president of NCR Commerce.

According to the report, NCR increased its market share of the SCO industry to 33%, which is twice the share of the second-highest supplier. It also led in the grocery+ and general merchandise verticals. NCR is among the top two global technology providers with its rising electronic point of sale (EPOS) market share at 13%.

The report states that more than 190,000 self-checkout units were delivered to customers around the world in 2022, which is the second-highest amount ever. The boom is fueled by the wide range of retailers purchasing the technology, such as small grocery chains, drugstores and c-stores.

In “Who’s Minding the Store,” (February 2023) NACS Magazine reported on retailers turning to automation to engage customers and boost the bottom line.

The article quotes John Douang, CEO of Aisle 24, a Toronto-based retailer. “Gen Z and millennial consumers are the largest spenders,” he said. “As Gen Z gets older, those consumers are going to control a bigger market spend. Their expectations are very aligned with the digital world. Having a traditional experience in a retail environment doesn’t really align with their demands.”
