BOSTON—GasBuddy, the travel and navigation app, has released its latest report on consumer ratings and foot traffic at gas stations in the United States.
This report analyzes more than 10 million consumer visits and two million ratings and reviews between January and April, revealing the top-performing brands and the impact of COVID-19 on consumer sentiment and behavior.
The survey found that stations with above-average cleanliness ratings have received 17.23% more visits than their below-average competitors during COVID-19.
“Convenience retailers are essential businesses during times of crisis, but COVID-19 is bringing consumers to the stores with new questions and concerns,” said Frank Beard, convenience store and retail trends analyst at GasBuddy. “Is it safe to touch the pump handles? When was the last time the store was cleaned and disinfected? According to GasBuddy data, expectations are sky-high.”
Texas-based Buc-ee’s remains America’s top-rated brand. In second place is Tennessee-based Twice Daily, followed by Illinois-based Kelley’s Market, Oklahoma-based QuikTrip and Pennsylvania-based Wawa.
While Buc-ee’s (30–49 locations) received the top score for cleanliness, other brands performed well in their respective segments. Winners include Iowa-based Hy-Vee, (50–249 locations) Wisconsin-based Kwik Trip (250–999 locations), Iowa-based Casey’s General Stores (1,000–3,999 locations) and California-based Chevron (4,000+ locations).
Fuel and convenience retailers are essential businesses facing serious challenges, such as a steep decline in commuter customers as many Americans transitioned to work-at-home. According to GasBuddy data, visits bottomed-out between March 26 and April 1 but have risen in the time since.
