ALEXANDRIA, Va.—On this week’s episode of Convenience Matters, “Evolving to Alternative Fuel Sales,” NACS hosts John Eichberger, executive director for the Fuels Institute, and Donovan Woods, director of operations for the Fuels Institute, talk to Jeff Hove, fuel specialist for NATSO, about vehicles and fuel types. NATSO represents travel plaza and truck stop owners and operators.
For retailers considering adding alternative fuels, Hove recommended looking at the economics first. “We crunch the numbers to find out where your margins become more favorable, or in some cases, it’s a wash and maybe this isn’t something that’s good for you,” he said. “Second, we look at the available supply in your region … to see if the biofuel is even available. Thirdly, we look at how do we blend, store and sell it.”
On the consumer side, it’s important that the “consumer experience be as simple as possible, and it’s not simple anymore to fill up your tank of gas,” Hove pointed out. “Your pump messaging is very important because [all these choices can be] a hurdle, and it’s an existing problem today.”
To avoid potential risky situations, “employ very simple best practices when you’re new to this,” Hove said. For example, if transitioning to bio-diesel, making sure you clean out the old diesel tank ahead of filling the tank with bio-diesel can prevent many problems.
