MILWAUKEE, Wis.—Wisconsin finally has its own self-checkout store with the opening of Three Square Self Pay Market, Wisconsin Public Radio reports. The small c-store is located in the Brookfield Square mall.
The store stocks around 400 items, such as snacks, toiletries, coffee and sandwiches. Checkout lanes are similar to supermarket self-checkout kiosks. A video camera monitors the store, but no employees are on site.
“As nice as it is to say ‘Hi, how are you,’ to someone, it does take up time,” said Jennifer Onsgard, Three Square office manager. “So especially when someone is on a break or wants to grab something quickly and get back to their shopping, this takes seconds as opposed to minutes.”
Currently, Three Square Self Pay Markets has more than 2,500 U.S. markets and 300 locations worldwide. The self-checkout store is looking into additional locations in Wisconsin malls.
“Obviously a lot of honor system is involved, but there are ways to track what is going on inside the store, so we are hoping it is a big success,” said Scott Olson, general manager of Brookfield Square about Three Square. “It’s really nice to have this availability here.”
