ALEXANDRIA, Va.—On this week’s episode of Convenience Matters, “Clean Fuel = Happy Cars,” NACS hosts John Eichberger, executive director for the Fuels Institute, and Donovan Woods, director of operations for the Fuels Institute, talk with Michael Vanover, president and CEO of Clean Fuels National, about how to keep fuel safe and clean.

“People are noticing now and wanting to know what’s in the bottom of their storage tanks,” Vanover said. “They want to address any problems [with their fuel storage] before it happens.”

What should tank owners do to monitor their storage? “There are things you can do on the ground that are really inexpensive,” Vanover said. “Look at the obvious things like are your seals tight? Do you have water intrusion coming in from an old drain plug? Do we have a vapor recovery that’s been damaged?”

Vanover pointed out that “not many people can go through this industry and not have some kind of problem” with their storage tanks. “Without a good housekeeping program in place, they’re definitely going to have [a problem] at some point,” he said. “At the end of the day, you’ve got a filter worth maybe $4 on a dispenser that will hold a handful of contamination standing between your customer and your reputation. That’s not enough for me, and it won’t be enough for most people.”

Each week a new Convenience Matters episode is released.
