LONDON—United Kingdom-based Sainsbury’s is opening something new: A revised c-store format for busy city workers in London’s Square Mile, reports Retail Insight.
The 2,200-square-foot Mansion House store will feature fresh and prepared in-store food and beverages like pizza, sushi and fresh-squeezed juices, according to the Mirror. The new On the Go location aims to bring a new c-store format to customers who are, well, on the go, and have limited time to shop. But for shoppers with a bit more time, the store includes tables for eating in.
The store also features new digital services like the SmartShop mobile app where “customers can shop with till-free and enjoy faster checkouts.”
“Convenience is a growing part of our business, and we have greater capability than ever to truly tailor local stores to local needs across our products, formats, services and operations,” said Sainsbury’s Commercial Operations Director Graham Biggart. “We’re confident this format will further strengthen our market-leading position in convenience.”
The Sainsbury’s chain has opened a few neighborhood-based convenience stores, receiving positive responses from its customer base. The company has more than 130 Local stores, which Retail Insight says it can transform into the new On the Go concept. During the next few months, Sainsbury’s plans to add nine additional On the Go locations in Edinburgh, Bristol, Glasgow and London.
