NAPERVILLE, Ill.—Amazon Fresh is expanding outside of California, with its fifth location scheduled to open Thursday in Naperville, Ill., Chain Store Age reports. Amazon opened its Fresh grocery concept in August 2020 in Woodland Hills, Calif., followed by locations in North Hollywood, Northridge and Irvine, Calif.

The 35,000-square-foot location in Illinois has traditional cashier checkouts, as well as the option of the Amazon Dash Cart, which Amazon launched in July 2020. The cart combines computer vision algorithms with a sensor fusion to identify and scan items put into the cart. Customers put bags in the cart, sign in via a Fresh QR code inside the Amazon app, shop and leave via the Dash Cart lane to automatically record their transaction and payment.

Amazon has also tied its Alexa voice technology with Amazon Fresh, allowing customers to access their Alexa shopping lists via the app or Dash Cart. Throughout the store, Amazon Echo Show devices allow customers to ask Alexa the location of products.

The grocery store also provides direct, same-day delivery as well as curbside and in-store pickup options. Prime members receive free, same-day delivery. In addition, customers can return products and pick up packages at the store.
