CHICAGO—Up-and-coming convenience retailer Foxtrot is on the move with plans to open two locations in Washington, D.C., in the first quarter of 2021, in addition to being on the hunt via a contest for new local brands to land spots among the curated offerings it delivers to customers in under an hour.

The new D.C. locations will open by March in the Georgetown and Mt. Vernon Square neighborhoods, reports, and will include space for on-premise dining. The stores will stock grab-and-go meals, grocery items, wine and beer. NACS Daily reported on plans for the D.C. stores earlier this year after Foxtrot closed on a fresh round of venture capital funding.

Launched in 2013 as a beverage delivery app, Foxtrot has eight c-stores in Chicago and two in Dallas. This month, Foxtrot kicked off the Up and Comers Small Makers Award to discover and support the next great brands in food, beverage, wellness, self-care and more from small makers and diverse local businesses.

One “hero” winner will receive $25,000, a one-hour mentorship opportunity with three of the contest’s high-profile judges, a spot on Foxtrot’s shelves for at least three months and a chance to pitch their idea to venture capital fund Imaginary.

Winners also will be selected in categories that include best branding and packaging, ingredient innovation, “just damn good,” Best of Chicago, Best of Dallas and Best of D.C.

“Since Foxtrot’s inception, we’ve believed in filling our shelves with best-in-class products that we know our guests will love, many of which are from small businesses that have grown to be the heart of our stores,” Mike LaVitola, CEO and co-founder of Foxtrot, said in a press release. “We are incredibly humbled and excited to now extend that opportunity to other brands across the country, and to increase our commitment to supporting small, local businesses with an emphasis on diversity of these makers. Through the awards program, our hope is that small business owners will gain the tools they need to take their operations to the next level, while also giving our customers new brands to discover.”

The deadline to enter is January 10, and winners will be selected by February 16.
