CATHLAMET, Wash.—Dollar General has opened its first Washington state location in Cathlamet, the Goodlettsville, Tennessee-based company announced Monday. The discount retailer already has started construction on six more locations in the state.
Last month, Dollar General announced plans to open 1,000 new stores in 2020, up slightly from the 975 it opened in 2019. The chain also said it would remodel 1,500 existing stores and relocate 80 more. The company said it would nearly double its normal hiring rate, adding as many as 50,000 employees by the end of April.
“Dollar General is proud to extend our store presence and bring our mission of serving others to Washington state residents,” said Steve Sunderland, Dollar General’s executive vice president of store operations. “We are proud to be able to open and operate stores to serve our customers and communities with an affordable and convenient retail option particularly during these unprecedented times. We believe the opening of each new Dollar General store represents positive economic impact, and we look forward to being a longstanding business partner and serving our Washington customers.”
Like other retailers still open during the pandemic, Dollar General has modified its hours to allow for senior shopping and extra time for cleaning. The company also said it would hire up to 50,000 new workers by the end of April for its distribution center, private fleet networks and other positions.
Dollar General currently operates more than 16,300 stores in 46 states, and about 75% percent of the American population is within five miles of a Dollar General.
