Amazon to Expand Go Technology Beyond Its Stores

The retailer is in talks to bring the cashier-free tech to movie theaters and airports.

SEATTLE—Wanting the world to experience its Go technology, Amazon is in discussions with other retailers to bring the cashier-free tech to airports and movie theaters, CNBC reports. The move would provide Amazon with a way to increase its retail presence without building more Go stores.

Currently, Amazon has 16 Go stores, but the company wants to partner with other retailers to use the Go technology. Cineworld’s Regal theaters and OTG’s CIBO Express outlets at airports have been talking with Amazon about using the cashierless technology. In addition, the online retailer is considering baseball stadium concession stands as another possible partner.

The retailer has a timeline of technology installation during the first quarter of 2020, with expansion to hundreds of locations by the end of next year. Amazon has considered several different strategies for third-party Go partnerships, including a percentage of sales fed through Go-equipped stores and an upfront payment coupled with a monthly fee.

Amazon hasn’t publicly commented on the news. Microsoft has partnered with Walmart and Walgreens with its checkout technology. Last month, 7-Eleven started using Microsoft Surface devices loaded with software designed to help retailers assess their stores.
