DUBLIN—Circle K is partnering with the Olympic Federation of Ireland and Paralympics Ireland for the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Games, reports Around the Rings. Circle K is Ireland’s largest gas station retailer, and the chain is donating 250,000 euros (US$276,992) in digital coins to Team Ireland athletes through a new initiative called “Here for Ireland”.
Circle K customers can show their support by scanning their Circle K app or their Play or Park loyalty tag in the store. That will automatically generate digital coins, and athletes who sign up for the initiative can redeem the digital coins for complimentary fuel, food or refreshments between now and the Tokyo 2020 Games.
As of publication in Around the Rings, 60 athletes have signed up to take part. The digital coins will be distributed evenly among all participating athletes.
One Irish athlete and Olympic hopeful, Ciara Mageean, said, “Athletes make many sacrifices—physical, emotional and financial—as they strive to achieve Olympic glory. Circle K’s Here for Ireland initiative will have a hugely positive impact on all Team Ireland athletes as the digital coins generated by Circle K customers will fuel our journey, quite literally, to Tokyo.”
