Consumers will get speedy service without having to pay a membership fee.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – This week, Walmart reported that it will roll out next-day delivery for its most popular merchandise, an announcement that came just two weeks after Amazon said it is upgrading its free shipping option for Prime members to one-day delivery instead of two.

According to U.S. News, Walmart has been building its own network of more efficient e-commerce distribution centers to upgrade delivery services.

Amazon Prime members pay $119 a year for the free-delivery service, and analysts have warned that the online retailer must cut delivery time in half to make buying a membership more attractive. Other retailers, including Walmart, have offered free two-day deliveries without charging a membership fee.

Walmart’s stepped-up efforts are expected to put pressure on other retail rivals that are already investing in millions of dollars to reduce the delivery window.
