ALEXANDRIA, Va. – On this week’s episode of Convenience Matters, “A Conversation with Sonja Hubbard,” NACS hosts Jeff Lenard, vice president of strategic industry initiatives, and Carolyn Schnare, director of strategic initiatives, discuss the ups and downs of running a company with Sonja Hubbard, principal with the Yates Group. Hubbard is also the former CEO of E-Z Mart Stores and was the first NACS chairwoman.

“I probably learned the most from some of the bad moments in my career,” Hubbard said. “The connections that I made through NACS and the industry got me through some of the tough times.”

Hubbard recommended that each company do a “self-assessment of your company—where you’re going, and what your strategies are.” Part of that self-assessment should include employees. “You have to grow your people,” she said. “You’ve got to rely on your people, and they’re the ones I miss the most.”

In reflecting on being an early leader in the convenience and fuel retail industry, Hubbard said that “it helps for women to connect with other women in the industry. … There were times when I was the only women in the room. The women of today have a different advantage [than I did]. … I think it’s time for us as women to stop waiting our turn.”
